The Spanish women have enjoyed scoring goals so far and now they face off against their euphoric hosts. Spain has only one objective at this Women's European Championship and this is to win the title. The dominant team of recent years has already given us a little taste of what to expect from them during the preliminary round. After a 5-0 opening victory against Portugal, La Roja swept Belgium 6-2 and then finished the group stage with a 3-1 victory against Italy. So, they scored 14 goals which is a truly impressive performance for three matches. There were seven in the first half and seven in the second, so the yield was fairly distributed. It's also interesting to note that the Spanish women have conceded seven goals in the first half this year. Anyway a win for the Swiss would be an absolute sensation, especially since qualifying for the round of 8 was anything but a foregone conclusion. The team had lost 1-2 to Norway in their opening European Championship match, followed by a 2-0 victory against Iceland. Against Finland, everything looked set for a 1-0 defeat and the resulting elimination. Riola Xhemaili scored the equalizer for the final 1-1 in the second minute of stoppage time, which as absolutely deserved. |
